Ice Hockey and Tilburg are intrinsically linked. Tilburg lives and breathes the sport, not least because of the successful Tilburg Trappers, but the ice hockey clubs The Early Birds, The Rubber Ducks and Midnight Players also create a perfect ice hockey climate. This year, the 33th edition of the Chris Verwijst Tournament took place, which is the internationally renowned tournament for young ice hockey talent.
Tilburg is the perfect 'breeding ground' for ice hockey and will demonstrate that fact by organizing the 2010 World Championship division I.

Every year in Tilburg, following the national example, we also arrange a magnificently organised Sports Gala. During that event we announce who, in our opinion, has become the sportsman, sportswoman and sports team of the year. It is always impressive to hear about the achievements of our Tilburg sports people. We really do have a number of people in our midst who perform at a high level.
For numerous reasons, it is good to stop and ponder this for a moment. The fact of the matter is that top sport requires not only something from those who practice the sport, but also something from the city, the sports facilities and the clubs. The better everything is attuned, the higher the level achieved. Tilburg believes that the achievement of the aforementioned is of great importance and wishes to distinguish itself on account of this. Top sport has a huge social consequence and an unprecedented ability to unite people.
It stands for self-control, perseverance, health, team spirit and success. Numerous people, and in particular young people, are inspired by sport, and nowadays that is for the greater good. It is for that reason that, as the official responsible for this event, I want to do everything possible to give sport in our city the status that it deserves.
With a numer of new sports facilities currently under construction, we want to convert our laudatory words into deeds and further substantiate our image as a serious (top) sports city. The multi-functional sports complex T-kwadraat and the Ice Sports Centre of Tilburg are good examples of this. Both recreational and top sports people will excel in these modern and challenging facilities. This is also an excellent place in which to organise the 2010 Ice Hockey World Championship.
When organising such a large-scale event, cooperation is of great importance. In Tilburg, we ensure that this cooperation is as broad as possible, for example, with the inclusion of the educational sector and the sports associations. The top ice hockey club, Tilburg Trappers, is already straining at the leash to do its bit for the event. Tilburg lives and breathes the sport of ice hockey. It is fantastic that we are given the opportunity of underscoring this success by organising the 2010 World Championship.
