The city is greener than many people think. There are many parks and gardens in the city and it is surrounded by endless swathes of green nature. Take the lift to the top floor of a high building and you will see for yourself: Tilburg is bordered on all sides by nature. Heaths, shady forests, sand dunes and of course fields of cattle.
Tilburg invests heavily to maintain this variety of nature. Not only in the surrounding areas, but also within the city itself. Take the Donge Valley, for example. The Donge River meanders through the large new Reeshof housing estate for a distance of almost six kilometres! A special nature project in the middle of an urban area. Drop in at the Tourist Office, they can tell you all about the opportunities there are to enjoy the surroundings.
In fact, Tilburg's commitment to the environment goes so far that the outdoor swimming pool, De Rauwbaken, is managed ecologically – and that means no chlorine! A biologist ensures that the natural balance of the pool is maintained. The pool is also used to teach children about flora and fauna – an initiative by one of the residents of Tilburg.
