The Dutch national team has lost its final game in preparation for the upcoming 2010 IIHF World Championship Division I Group A. In Stappegoor rink Team France clinched a 6-0 victory over the hosts.
France was simply too good for The Netherlands in Tilburg on Thursday. This sort of opponent will help the Dutch team adjust to the fast pace of international hockey however.
The Dutch were not completely outplayed. 'We started the game pretty well', said national team coach Tommie Hartogs. 'Too bad a slip-up near the end of the period costs us a goal. We had a few chances ourselves through Tanner and Bruinsma. The amount of shots was fairly balanced throughout the first period.'
French youngster Stephane da Costa opened the scoring for the visitors, after which they worked to a 4-0 advantage after two periods. 'We did not stick to our game plan in the second', said Hartogs. 'This caused mistakes and you can not afford to give up pucks against a team like France.'
In the final period the French scored two more goals to put the final score on the board. Diederick Hagemeijer had the best chance to put the Dutch team on the board, but missed his chance.
Hartogs announced that forwards Mitch Bruijsten and Steve Mason would not be joining the team. Both players are still in college in North-America. The Hague's Tony Demelinne was released from the squad. Defencemen Nick Verbruggen and Erik Tummers will not play, due to injury.
The largest question mark for the team will be star forward Jamie Schaafsma. The forward is fighting for a IHL-playoff-spot with Flint Generals. If the team fails to make the playoffs, then he could travel over to Tilburg to join Team Netherlands.
