Team Austria started the campaign to get back to the top level with a convincing 13-0 win over Team Serbia.Daniel Welser had four goals and four assists.
Serbia is freshly promoted from Division II and would do well to stay up. Austria came to Tilburg with just one goal in mind, promotion. After just three minutes of play they hit the post and one minute later they opened the score. Roland Kaspitz tallied from close range during the first powerplay. Just 2,5 minutes later Gerhard Unterluggauer scored the second one.

From that moment on the Austrians added goals to their tally with an alarming regularity from a Serbian point of view. At the end of period one the score had been run up to 7-0. The rest of the game Austria kept ruling the game, but Serbia managed to at least stem the flow of goals, conceding three goals in both the second and the third period of the match.

Oliver Setzinger had a goal and five assists, while Thomas Koch added a goal and three assists. Lithuania is the next opponent for Austria.
The coach of Serbia Mark Pederson: ‘We had a long journey that lasted over 22 hours in the bus. Ofcourse that affected the game. But Austria played very sound and quick. It was hard for us to keep up with them.’ Pederson knows the rink very well as the Canadian is the current head coach of Dutch team Tilburg Trappers. Pederson ended up as head coach of Serbia thanks to a colleague. Pederson: ‘Alex Andjelic works in the youth system of Tilburg. We talked about this tournament and he asked if I was interested. After that thing went fast and that’s how I ended up as coach of Serbia.’
Austrian coach Bill Gilligan was pleased with the performance of his team: ‘It was very important for us to score quickly. We have a very good skating team which helped us a lot today. Our opponent had lots of trouble with our pace. I think they did very well the first five minutes. But after a few powerplays for us, it went wrong for them.‘
