Japan strikes against hosts

Team Japan spoiled the start of hosts Netherlands by beating them three goals to one. The Dutch goal came with just one second to go.

The rink was sold out for the opening game of hosts The Netherlands. The Dutch team has to make amends without star forward Jamie Schaafsma and talented youngster Mitch Bruijsten. This means a severe dent in the offensive power for the team. Japan started faster and more accurate and scored early on through Go Tanaka as the Dutch had trouble adapting to the higher pace of international hockey.

The Dutch tried their best, worked hard but it was not enough to beat Japan. Captain Takahito Suzuki scored the second goal on the powerplay in the second period, with Masato Domeki doing more damage at the end of the period. ‘Unlucky goals', Dutch national coach Tommie Hartogs called them as Holland was playing better hockey in the second part of the match.

Goaltender Yutaka Fukufuji played in the host city of Tilburg during the season and received a standing ovation when his name was announced. He nearly got a shutout in the game. But it was spoiled by NCAA Division 1-defender Mike Dalhuisen who scored with just one second left on the clock. It must give the Dutch a bit of hope for the remainder of the tournament.
