Team Austria kept their promotion hopes alive with a 6-2 win over Lithuania. Three goals in the second period decided the game.
Lithuania played an excellent first period, outplaying Austria in five against five, taking a deserving lead after fifteen minutes as Arturas Katulis scored on the powerplay. The team from the Baltic could not maintain their advantage until the first break. With under three minutes left in the period referee Jacob Grumsen from Denmark sent two Lithuanians to the penalty bench. Matthias Trattnig took advantage.
Austria took control of the game in the second period. Robert Lukas handed them a lead after eight minutes. Thomas Koch and Thomas Pöck then edged their team further ahead. Lithuania bravely battled on, but ran into too many penalties to have a chance of a comeback in the match. Austria scored some more goals in the third period. Netminder Nerijus Dauksevicius had an outstanding game for his team.
Tempers flared in the end with a lot of penalties.
The Lithuanian captain Sarunas Kuliesius remains positive after the loss: ‘I still think we are able to beat any team here. Yesterday we had lots of problems due to our long journey to Tilburg. Today against Austria I saw a lot of improvement. Unfortunately we could only keep up with Austria for 30 minutes. We got too many penalties so we got tired near the end of the second period. I don’t know if all penalties against us were fair, therefore I have to look at the videos. Hopefully on Thursday our forward Darius Lelenas can play. He has an upper body injury but maybe he is recovered in time for our third match.’
Austrian coach Bill Gilligan saw a bad start from his team: ‘We were not able to judge the quality of our opponent. Maybe after the easy game against Serbia, we felt like this game would be easy too. We were not concentrated enough and they just surprised us with their game. Lithuania came out strong and played a physical, hard game.’
