The Netherlands picked up their first victory of the tournament. The team of coach Tommie Hartogs beat Lithuania 4-1 after a physical and emotional match.
The match between Holland and Lithuania had all the ingredients for a great hockey game. Unfortunately referee Grumsen did not work along. Every little foul got penalized. Therefore the game ended with 99 penalty minutes. The penalty box in Tilburg saw a lot of action tonight.
Not surprisingly, the first goal came on a powerplay. Darius Pliskauskas silenced the crowd by beating Phil Groeneveld from the point of the slot: 1-0. Pliskauskas scored after a smart pass from Tomas Vysniauskas.

Holland tied the game shortly before the first break. Peter van Biezen tallied his second of the tournament. Remarkable enough, van Biezen never scored before on a World Championship.
In the second period a strong Dutch side took the lead. After seven minutes youngster Lars van Sloun gave his team the lead. Van Sloun deflected a shot from van Biezen in front of goalie Nerijus Daukcevisius. The 19-year old van Sloun is playing his first World Championship. The rookie had a succesfull season with his Dutch club Eaters Geleen. Van Sloun scored in the Dutch cup final and got 20 goals and 25 assists during the full season.

Four minutes later Netherlands stroke again. This time captain Bob Teunissen scored after a scrimmage before the Lithuanian net.
During the final period, Lithuania got the opportunity to come back into this game. Lars van Sloun got penalized for a checking from behind. Van Sloun got sent away with five minutes plus a game misconduct. However, the Dutch were able to survive this long powerplay. Two minutes before the end of regulation, Diederick Hagemeijer sealed the deal. Bob Teunissen blocked a shot and then Hagemeijer picked up the puck and skated towards the empty net: 4-1.

The Lithuanian coach Sidaravicius was not happy with his team's performance: ‘We were not good enough during all the powerplays and we faced a beautiful goalie tonight. We did not have the key to beat this Dutch goalie tonight. ‘
His colleague Tommie Hartogs was pleased: ‘I think this was a deserved win for us. We killed a lot of penalties and dominated in the most areas of the game. However the victory does not change our attitude. The game against Austria will be difficult and the last game against Serbia remains crucial for the rankings.'
Holland is now fourth with this first win. Lithuania is still waiting on the first points together with Serbia.
