First win for Lithuania

First win for Lithuania

Lithuania finally claimed their first victory of this tournament. Lithuania defeated Serbia 10-4. Tadas Kumeliauskas en Arturis Katulis both scored twice for Lithuania.

Both teams started without any points. If Lithuania would lose against the Serbs, then relegation was almost unavoidable. But Lithuania turned out way too strong for Serbia.

After the first period Lithuania grabbed a 3-0 lead. Rolandas Aliukonis opened the score with a shot from the blue line after five minutes. At 17.05 Arturas Katulis doubled the lead from close rangeEerste zege voor Litouwen. Just before the break Tadas Kumeliauskas made it 3-0.

Serbia lost the puck in the neutral zone. Povilas Verenis picked up the puck and found Kumeliauskas free in front of goalie Milan Lukovic. The Serbian  goalie received a new helmet before the game. His own helmet was too damaged but Serbia did not have enough money to replace it. The volunteers of the organization of this tournament all chipped in to buy Lukovic a new one.

The new helmet could not help Lukovic. In the second period Lithuania extended the lead to 6-0. Darius Pliskauskas, Tadas Kumeliauskas and Povilas Verenis scored the goals. Kumeliauskas scored his fifth of the tournament. The 19-year old attacker is now second in scoring goals during this tournament. Only Konstiantyn Kasianchuk with six goals is above Kumeliauskas .

Serbia finally scored at the end of the second period. Strong defender Daniel Jacob scored the first goal to make it 6-1.

The change did not help immediately. Marko Sretovic scored 6-4 shortly after the goalie change. But the Serbs did not get any closer. At 47.04, Arturas Katulis made it 7-4 with his second goal of the afternoon. In the remaining minutes Lithuania scored three more goals to put up the final score of 10-4. Egidijus Bauba, Nerijus Alisauskas and Dalius Vaiciukevicius were the goalscorers.

Thanks to the victory, Lithuania looks safe from relegation. The Serbs however need a miracle to stay at this level. If Lithuania loses to Japan, Serbia will have to beat Netherlands by a margin of five goals. If Lithuania beats Japan, then a win against Holland is enough for Serbia.
