Another bronze medal for Japan

Another bronze medal for Japan

Japan secured the bronze medal on the final day of the World Championship Division I Group A. In Tilburg, Japan defeated Lithuania 7-1. Seven different players scored for Japan.

With this victory against Lithuania, Japan will collect their fifth bronze medal in a row. Lithuania would have got the bronze if they got a big win against Japan. But Japan proved way too strong for the Baltic team.

Japan needed fifteen minutes to produce the opening goal. With two players for Lithuania in the penalty box, Go Tanaka opened the score with his second goal of the tournament. Thirty seconds later Japan doubled the lead. Defenseman Jun Tononsaki tallied his first goal of the tournament.

Lithuania got their first goal early in the second period. Mindaugas Kieras scored for Lithuania but that's as close as they would get. Two minutes later Makoto Kawashima made it 3-1 for Japan.

Before the second intermission captain Takahito Suzuki sealed the deal by scoring the fourth Japanese goal. It was the third goal for Suzuki in Tilburg, which makes him the scoring leader for Japan. In the third period Japan easily extended their lead to 7-1. Bin Ishioka, Takuma Kawai and Hiroki Ueno tallied for Japan.

Lithuania will have to see if they will finish in fourth or fifth place. If hosts Holland beat Serbia, then Lithuania will be fifth.
