Austria regain top status

Austria regain top status

Matthias Trattnig scored the game winning goal in the third period against Ukraine to hand Austria promotion back to the top flight. The thriller in Tilburg finished in 2-1.

The final match of the World Championships in Tilburg was a memorable one. Two great teams matching each other move for move in a game of high pace and great quality. Definately worthy of a final. Thomas Raffs opened up the game early with a powerplay goal that for a long time would be the only goal in the match.

This was not due to lack of opportunities, but both goaltenders in the game showed their class to keep the puck out of the net. Both teams also played excellent on the penalty kill as referee Brueggeman gave them plenty of chances with one or two men more on th ice. Ukraine finally equalized ten minutes before the end as Andrei Sriubko scored on the powerplay.

Their happiness did not last long. Under two minutes later Matthias Trattnig blasted one of the most important goals of his career. A match penalty against David Schuller gave Ukraine a five minute powerplay to get back into the game, but Reinhard Divis and his men kept the sheet clean, so for the second year in a row Ukraine were denied promotion. Austria, who did not deserve to get relegated last year, are back one year later.
