Tilburg takes the initiative

Tilburg takes the initiative

Tilburg is a practical city. A city that likes to get on with the job. It has always been that way, and it still is. The city's roots go back to the days of the textile industry, which flourished here during the last century. The thousands of working-class families from the textile days have given Tilburg a get-on-with-it mentality. A city with drive!

That drive comes through in all aspects of the city. Tilburg is a city on the move. That is what gives it its special character. It can clearly be seen in the city's architecture. You will find no monumental, historic buildings, defining the city's face for all eternity, but a mixture of architectural styles. The city combines the distinctive atmosphere of the past with the dynamism of the present. Rustic and urban are mixed in together. Here, you can see an old church in a pre-war neighbourhood, there a modern city square with skyscrapers and apartments. The city is never ostentatious or flashy, but retains its human dimensions. That is what makes Tilburg so accessible: everyone can find what they are looking for!

Perhaps the single, most characteristic symbol of Tilburg is the fun fair or 'kermis' - the biggest in the country. It has the newest, most spectacular rides, but also the nostalgia of days gone by. It is popular entertainment at its best, attracting visitors from all over the country and abroad. The fun fair is for everyone – and so is Tilburg!
