Tilburg's various art academies and associations are a major driving force behind the cultural life of the city. Tilburg is the only city in the Netherlands that has six vocational art academies: the academy of music, the rock academy, the dance academy, the academy of drama, the academy of architecture and urban development and the academy of visual arts. This diversity produces a wide variety of performances, concerts and events. When you add all the city's clubs and associations (which range from carnival bands to classical ensembles), the result is a city brimming with creative enthusiasm. Things always go with a swing in Tilburg! Taking the initiative to organize your own art fair, exhibition or performance – that is typical in Tilburg.
The city's museums are another important cultural force. In the field of visual arts, the museum 'De Pont' has an excellent international reputation. Located in a marvellous old factory, the museum boasts a sensational modern collection that invites – both literally and figuratively – its visitors to experience works of art in the true sense of the word. Very different, but equally fascinating, is the Audax Textile Museum. This is a working museum which will take you back into a genuine old textile factory, complete with working steam engines and the Textile Lab studio. Modern technology and textile art can also be seen here. Other interesting museums include the North Brabant Nature Museum, Scryption – the Museum of Written Communication and the Museum of Animated Art.
Film fans are in the right place in Tilburg, too. There are several cinemas, each with their own distinctive atmosphere, showing many different genres of film, from popular to art house. And then there are still the countless bars and student cafés, the famous jazz scene (Paradox and Café de Voortuin), the 013 Pop centre, the theatres, almost a hundred restaurants, and so on. There is plenty on offer, the choice is yours!
