Austria
Austria already joined the IIHF in 1912, playing its first international match that year facing Bohemia in Prague, losing 5-0. Team Austria regularly medalled in the European Championships in the 1920s, with the gold medal in 1927 the highlight. Austria also won bronze medals n the 1931 and 1947 World Championships. The team has twelve Olympic appearances to its name, including three of the last four tournaments. Fifth place in 1928 was the highest finish. Won the Division I-tournament in Innsbruck two years ago, but immediately got relegated again.
Team Austria took part in the World Championship in Switzerland, losing out to the United States, Sweden and Latvia in the group stage. Austria beat both Hungary and Germany in the relegation round, but it was not enough. Since Germany host the tournament this year, they could not be demoted, so Austria went down in their place. Thomas Koch top scored for Austria with four goals and three assists in six matches. Thomas Vanek tallied four points in six games.
Thomas Vanek is one of the premier goal scorers in the National Hockey League. Born in Vienna he moved to North America at a young age to pursue his ice hockey career. Was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres 5th overall in the 2003 entry draft. Had three forty goal seasons in the NHL so far, including last season. Always appears for Team Austria if his NHL-duties allow it.
Thomas Pöck became a regular with the New York Islanders in the NHL, while Andreas Nodl saw significant ice time with the Philadelphia Flyers. Goal tender Reinhard Divis has NHL-experience, while his colleague Bernd Brückler played at the highest level in Finland. Christoph Brandner also appeared in the NHL and has several seasons in the DEL under his belt.
Austria will look to bounce back from their demotion last year to regain their place among the elite.
