Short profile:

Lithuania joined the IIHF shortly before the outbreak of World War II. The Baltic nation was part of the Soviet Union for many years after the war, but made a comeback in ice hockey after independence in 1992. The first international match was against neighbours Latvia, which was lost 13-2. Lithuania returned to the world stage in 1995 with a silver medal in the Poule C-championship and gained promotion to Division I in 2004, where the team has played since.

WC last season:

Lithuania hosted the Division I Group A-tournament in Vilnius, finishing the tournament fourth in the ranking with two wins in five matched. Lithuania proved too strong for Croatia and Australia and was beaten by Kazakhstan, Slovenia and Japan. Darius Lelenas top scored for the team with two goals and four assists in five matches. Donatas Kumeliauskas and Petras Nauseda tallied five points each.

Top player:

Dainius Zubrus has more than ten seasons in the National Hockey League under his belt, currently playing with the New Jersey Devils. Moved to North America at a young age to play lower level youth hockey in Canada. Was drafted 15th overall by the Philadelphia Flyers. Had six seasons with forty points or more, including 84 points in 71 matches with Washington in 05-06. Played for Russia in the World Cup of Hockey and only played one World Championship with Lithuania, the 2005 championship in Eindhoven, The Netherlands.

Other notable players:

Arturas Katulis has significant experience in the Finish leagues, while Egidijus Bauba has played in the UK for a long time. Darius Pliskauskas played in the UK, Belarus and the Latvian league, while Pijus Rulevicius found a spot with Chicago Steel in youth hockey in the USA.

Outlook:

Lithuania will be looking to challenge for a medal during the World Championship in Tilburg, an improvement on their fourth spot in last years tournament.
