Short profile:

Serbia joined the IIHF in 1939 under the flag of Yugoslavia. Team Serbia started playing as an independent team in 1995 beating Ukraine 15-3. Gained promotion to Division I for the first time, hosting last season’s tournament in Novi Sad.

WC last season:

Serbia hosted last years Division II-tournament in Novi Sad and gained promotion by winning all five matches, including victory after a shootout against promotion rivals Estonia. Serbia scored no less than forty goals, while conceding eleven. Marko Kovacevic top scored with eight goals and six assists in five matches. Fred Perowne and Marc-Andre Fournier each tallied twelve points in five matches.

Top player:

Marko Kovacevic is a 24-year old right winger, who made his debut for the national team at a very tender age. He played for Partizan Belgrade and Vojvodina Novi Sad before crossing the ocean to play a few matches for Sudbury Wolves in the Ontario Hockey League. Returned later to study at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, where he averaged just under a point per game. Top scored for Serbia in last years Division II-tournament in Novi Sad.

Other notable players:

Team Serbia could have two players in their squad with experience in Dutch conditions. Canadian born Fred Perowne played for Heerenveen Flyers in the past, while Branko Mamic has signed with Geleen Eaters for the 09/10-season. Csaba Prokec has been playing the lower leagues in Sweden, lastly with IK Pantern. Marc-Andre Fournier has significant experience in NCAA-hockey with Sacred Heart University and in the top league in Italy. Coach Mark Pederson works in the Dutch league as coach of Tilburg Trappers.

Outlook:

Serbia will be aiming to stave off relegation by surprising some of the teams that have been playing at Division I-level for a number of years.
