Short profile:

Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union for a long time and joined the IIHF after independence in 1992. Played their first international game in April of that year, losing 5-1 to Kazakhstan. First played at Pool C-level in 1993, but did not gain promotion until 1997, immediately marched on to the top flight of international hockey where the team played in nine consecutive championships. Got relegated in 2007 and is looking to move back up since. Ukraine made their Olympic debut in 2002, finishing in tenth place.

WC last season:

Ukraine participated in the Division I-tournament in Torun, Poland and only narrowly missed promotion. The team crucially lost the final match of the tournament 2-0 to Italy, despite a series of power plays early on. Won all other games in the tournament, including an overtime win against hosts Poland. Oleg Shafarenko top scored with four goals and an assist in five matches. Sergei Varlamov tallied four points in the tournament.

Top player:

Ruslan Fedotenko has been a regular in the NHL for the past eight years despite not being drafted. Was signed by the Philadelphia Flyers in 1999 and scored the Stanley Cup-winning goal in 2004 as a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Won his second cup last season playing for Pittsburgh Penguins. Finished the 2009 playoffs with 7 goals and 7 assists.

Other notable players:

The core of Team Ukraine plays with Sokil Kiev in the Belarus League. Andrei Mikhnov, Vadim Shakraychuk and Sergei Varlamov all have contracts in the Kontinental Hockey League.

Outlook:

Team Ukraine only narrowly missed out on promotion last year and will looking to make amends this time around.
